A "Nudge" at the Airport
I've always been disappointed by how people crowd around too close to the luggage carousel at airports, making it harder for those who aren't pushy to retrieve or even see their luggage. Why can't they stand back to make room for everyone? Do people really need some airport official there telling them to be nice?
No, it turns out that all they need is a well-crafted nudge.
When I went to get my luggage at the San Diego airport, I saw the two tiles closest to the carousel were dark, making them stand out from the lighter tiles on the rest of the floor. Soon passengers arrived and walked right up to the edge of the light tiles but kept the dark tiles free. Even as more people arrived and the luggage started flowing, people stayed off the closest tiles, allowing everyone to see. What a perfect nudge! My compliments to the airport tile designer!
